In Action

How Maine’s immigrant rights community is responding — and how you can join in.

It has been a challenging year for families, towns, and communities across Maine. This is where we gather our response — what the Coalition has said, what our neighbors have asked us to carry forward, and the concrete things anyone can do this week.

Section 1

Crisis Response

A crisis is any moment that upends life for immigrants in Maine — a death, a raid, a mass detention, a policy that lands overnight. Crisis response is how the Coalition meets those moments: what we said, what the people closest to it asked us to carry forward, and what the rest of us can do. Each entry gathers one event, most recent first.

Detentions at the Courthouse and the Jetport

Portland, Maine

ICE detained a married couple outside the Cumberland County Courthouse on August 11, and at least five people at the Portland International Jetport over two weeks — among them a MaineHealth nurse. Enforcement at a courthouse punishes people for showing up to their own hearings, and airport enforcement now runs on TSA passenger data. The Coalition is calling on state and local officials to protect access to courthouses, keep public resources out of federal immigration enforcement except where the law requires it, and allow remote court appearances where appropriate.

Fatal ICE-Involved Shooting

Biddeford, Maine

Our neighbors mourn Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero's senseless death and our lost sense of security. The Coalition issued an immediate statement, published the family's own words with their permission, and set out a letter of reflection and action — including how to support the family directly.
